About the artwork

For many years, Flanagan used the hare as the starting point to shape his ideas. This animal stands for freedom, independence, dynamism, fertility, strength and individuality. Since 1997, the hare – as opposed to the rabbit which one would expect to find in this habitat – has stood for hospitality, which is certainly one of our seaside resort's key values.

About the artist

British artist Barry Flanagan is one of the most outstanding representatives of post-war sculpture. His works draw interest from swathes of people throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and beyond. Through classical shapes and designs, he addresses themes such as the role of the individual and the artist in society.
