About the artwork

This bronze bust on a bluestone plinth dates from 1896 and was made to commemorate the death of Alfred Verwee. Alderman Paul Parmentier and his friends took the initiative to thank Alfred Verwee for the efforts he had made to turn Knokke into an internationally-renowned seaside resort.

About the artist

Born in Liège, Mignon was mostly known for his animal sculptures. The sculptor's ‘Fighting Bulls’ was met with great enthusiasm at the 1878 World’s Fair in Paris. Another of his well-known works ‘Hercules relief' is on display at the Royal Library in Brussels.
